It’s been over a month since I began this unique journey, cycling from Thailand to the Netherlands while juggling remote work. The experience has been incredibly transformative, impacting both my personal and professional life in ways I never imagined.
Covering Longer Distances
On an average day, I cycle between 100 and 150 kilometers, which is more than what most bicycle touring travelers typically cover. Through interactions with other bicycle travelers, I’ve learned that most ride for 50 to 100 kilometers. They usually start early in the morning and finish by early afternoon to avoid the heat. In contrast, I cycle from sunrise to sunset. Why? It allows me to allocate more work days. Additionally, post-cycling exhaustion leaves me unable to focus on work or other productive activities. Therefore, I maximize my daylight hours on the bike on days designated for cycling.
Balancing Cycling with Work
I’ve discovered that alternating between a few days of cycling and a few days of work is an effective rhythm. While cycling, I ponder my upcoming tasks, leading to clearer, more focused workdays. This approach has surprisingly boosted my productivity.
Affordability of the Journey
Financially, this adventure has been quite manageable, especially since I’m currently in Southeast Asia. Thailand and Laos have been particularly affordable, while Cambodia is slightly pricier but still within budget.
Work on the Go
For those curious about the kind of work compatible with a cycling journey, programming, graphic design, writing, and marketing are feasible options. Teaching English online might also work, thanks to consistent high-speed internet access even in remote parts of Laos. Guesthouses generally offer decent connectivity capable of video conferencing. If you’re unsure about your remote work options, cycling journey could be a perfect opportunity to explore. As I’ve cycled, I’ve been approached for various side gigs like locating local programmers for which I receive referral fees from tech companies. The road can open up unique and unexpected avenues for work.
Final Thoughts
To sum up, this journey has been both eye-opening and transformative. It’s challenged and changed me in ways I couldn’t have anticipated, offering unique work experiences and a new perspective on life. If you’re seeking a change and have a taste for adventure, perhaps it’s time to consider a journey like this.
